Hansa-traffic past and present::[request] News in the Baltic traffic area
MV Transfer has continued her way to the East and has today reached the area around Sicilia, Italy. Together with MV Vikingland, which also travelled a time from Travemünde for Transfennica, if I am right. The destination for the moment is the Suez Channel area. MV Vikingland will continue to Kuwait, waiting for orders.

In the shipyards there have been some changes:

MV Stena Vision has left the shipyard in Landskrona today in the morning and will travel to Karlskrona first.
MV Skania from Unity Line has also left the area around Gdansk and will arrive to Svinoujscie, Poland in the next hours.

In Odense there are at the moment 3 passenger ships in the shipyard:

MV Lofoten (Hurtigruten), a old vessel of the 1950ies.
MV Stena Germanica
MV Wind Ambition (ex MV Scandinavica, ex MV King of Scandinavia, ex MV Cesme) which has been rebuild to an hotel ship for offshore projects. She is in Odense surely for technical maintenance.

SS Rotterdam [by cos918]

Hansa-traffic past and present:: SS Rotterdam
Hello all
The ss Rotterdam in Rotterdam is up for sale. The price has droped from 120M euro to 81M euro. In her first year she had over 500 000 vistors and yet she still does not break even. The brings in to light the cost of big ship presavition. It all raises the question If Finnjet had been given a perment birth in Turku would she have broken even?

John

GTS Finnjet:: reason for scrapping finnjet
Hello,

It is completely possible that one main diesel which "someone" said was damaged, was actually only unserviceable due to an inexperienced crew taking over in Italy, but still had a certain number of good hours in her.

We heard from the last Finnish crewmen that they had trouble in teaching the new engineering crew. "Only one man out of them understood something"

It is a fact that a new inexperienced crew destroyed a brand new AC compressor.

We have conflicting opinions of what the core state of the main diesels was. Less conflict about the five aux diesels requiring replacing.

More efficient gas turbines were projected already in the early 1990's, but the owner decided to overhaul other ships instead. Her new reduction gears retained this future upgrade option.

Finnjet could most likely have run profitably without any major alterations on the lucrative South-Korea - Japan route, which was thwarted by South-Korean legislation penalizing ships based on their age.

What no one contests is that her "icebreaker" hull was in magnificent shape, which the men in India learned the hard way. She was well worthy of fresh machines or an exempt to junk ship laws governing for instance Greece. By letting her machine upgrades slip, she ended up in a state where a multitude of her machines required replacing to make her more economical in more competitive markets.

Finally, her designer and builder Mr. Saarikangas had projected a lifespan of 70-80 years.

That's the best answer I can give today based on discussions and her papers.

Hansa-traffic past and present::[solved] News from the old FINNJET harbours
- Travemünde -

The traffic control centre for the ship movements in the Baltic from Flensburg to Wismar gets also its outline. The shell of the building at the Trave river has been finished. It will fill the surrounding of the hotel a little bit, because the former Aquatop building is now missing. It will be interesting, when there will be build up a new project.
